How to spend 7 days in Crete
Crete is large enough that trying to see everything in one week usually creates more driving than enjoyment. A better first trip combines two or three areas, leaves room for beach time, and avoids crossing the island every day.
Day 1: Chania Old Town and Venetian Harbour
Start slowly in Chania. Walk through the Old Town, explore the Venetian Harbour, and enjoy your first Cretan meal without building a long driving day around your arrival. The historic centre is compact enough to explore on foot and gives you an easy introduction to the island.
Day 2: Western Crete beach day
Choose one major beach rather than trying to combine several distant places. Falasarna is a strong option for a classic beach day and sunset. If you prefer to stay closer to Chania, beaches around Akrotiri or Agioi Apostoloi reduce travel time.
Day 3: Balos or Elafonissi
Dedicate a full day to one of western Crete's headline coastal experiences. Balos is famous for its lagoon and dramatic landscape, while Elafonissi is known for shallow turquoise water and its distinctive sandy setting. Both require planning, so avoid putting them on the same day.
Day 4: Rethymno and Arkadi
Travel east and spend time in Rethymno's Old Town and around the Fortezza. If you have a car and want a cultural stop, Arkadi Monastery can fit naturally into a day around the Rethymno region.
Day 5: Heraklion and Knossos
Use a day for Minoan history. Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are an excellent pairing for travellers interested in archaeology. Leave time for the centre of Heraklion instead of treating the city only as a transit stop.
Day 6: Choose nature, villages or food
Your sixth day should reflect your interests. Hikers can consider a gorge or mountain route. Food-focused travellers can visit villages, wineries or traditional tavernas. Families may prefer a shorter excursion and another easy beach.
Day 7: Keep the final day flexible
Use the last day for something close to your accommodation. Return to a favourite beach, visit a museum you skipped, or enjoy a slow meal before travelling home. Keeping this day flexible also protects your trip if weather or fatigue changes earlier plans.
Should you stay in one place?
For seven days, one base can work if you are happy exploring mainly one side of Crete. If you want both western and central Crete, splitting your stay between two bases can reduce unnecessary driving.
