Which beaches should you visit in Crete?
Crete has more than 1,000 kilometres of coastline, so there is no single list that works for every traveller. The best choice depends on your base, transport, weather and whether you want facilities, shallow water, scenery or a quieter experience.
1. Elafonissi
Elafonissi is one of Crete's best-known beaches, with shallow turquoise water and a striking natural setting in the southwest. Go early in high season if you want a calmer experience.
2. Balos Lagoon
Balos is as much about the landscape as the swim. The lagoon, pale sand and rugged Gramvousa peninsula make it one of the island's signature views.
3. Falasarna
Falasarna offers a broad sandy coast on western Crete and is a good choice if you want space, swimming and a memorable sunset without squeezing several stops into the same day.
4. Marathi
Marathi, on the Akrotiri peninsula near Chania, is useful for travellers who want a relatively easy beach day with calm-water appeal and nearby food options.
5. Agioi Apostoloi
Close to Chania, Agioi Apostoloi is a practical option when you want to swim without committing to a long excursion.
6. Kedrodasos
Kedrodasos, near Elafonissi, feels more natural and less developed. Its dunes and juniper trees make it attractive to travellers who value scenery and simplicity.
7. Preveli
Preveli combines a river, palm grove and south-coast beach in one distinctive landscape. The approach involves walking, so it suits visitors comfortable with steps and uneven ground.
8. Triopetra
Triopetra is a spacious south-coast beach known for its dramatic rock formations and open landscape. It feels very different from the busy northern resort coast.
9. Vai
Vai is famous for the palm forest behind the beach and is one of the best-known stops in eastern Crete.
10. Matala
Matala combines a beach with its famous cliff caves and a lively village atmosphere. It works well for travellers who want more than just a swim.
11. Glyka Nera
Glyka Nera, or Sweet Water Beach, is reached by boat or on foot and rewards the extra effort with clear water and a more remote atmosphere.
12. Stavros
Stavros is another Akrotiri option near Chania and is attractive when you want a scenic bay without driving across western Crete.
How to choose the right beach
Check driving time, wind, access and facilities before you leave. A famous beach two hours away is not always better than a very good beach twenty minutes from your hotel.
