What should you do in Chania?
Chania works both as a destination and as a base for exploring western Crete. The best itinerary mixes time in the city with beaches, culture and one or two larger excursions.
1. Explore Chania Old Town
Walk through the historic quarters, narrow lanes and old buildings without rushing.
2. Walk the Venetian Harbour
Combine the harbour with coffee, dinner or an evening walk rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.
3. Visit the Archaeological Museum
A museum visit adds historical context to the cultural sites you may see elsewhere in Crete.
4. Swim near the city
Agioi Apostoloi and other nearby beaches are useful when you want a swim without losing half the day to transport.
5. Visit Falasarna
Reserve enough time to enjoy the beach and, if your schedule allows, stay for the west-coast sunset.
6. Plan a Balos day
Treat Balos as a substantial excursion rather than squeezing it between several other places.
7. Visit Elafonissi
Elafonissi is another full-day candidate, especially if swimming and beach scenery are priorities.
8. Explore Akrotiri
The peninsula near Chania combines beaches, monasteries and viewpoints.
9. Discover a village or winery
Leave the coast for part of your trip and experience western Crete's countryside.
10. Choose a gorge or mountain experience
Pick a route suited to your fitness, season and available time.
