Choosing the right base in Crete
Where you stay has a bigger impact on your Crete itinerary than most first-time visitors expect. The island is large, so choosing a base close to your priorities can save hours of driving.
Chania: best for western Crete
Chania is an excellent first choice if you want a beautiful Old Town, Venetian harbour, western beaches and access to destinations such as Balos, Elafonissi and the White Mountains. It also works well for travellers who enjoy evenings on foot around restaurants and bars.
Rethymno: best for balance
Rethymno sits between Chania and Heraklion and combines a compact historic centre with good access to central and western Crete. It is useful if you want old-town atmosphere without committing completely to the far west.
Heraklion: best for history and connections
Heraklion is the island's largest urban centre and a practical base for Knossos, the Archaeological Museum, central Crete and several north-coast destinations.
Agios Nikolaos: best for eastern Crete
Agios Nikolaos is a good base for Mirabello Bay, Elounda, Spinalonga and Lasithi. Choose it if your priority is eastern Crete rather than day trips to Chania or Elafonissi.
Should you split your stay?
If you have seven days or more and want to see different parts of the island, using two bases can make the trip much more comfortable.
What if you do not have a car?
Stay in or close to one of the main towns. This gives you easier access to buses, food, organised excursions and walkable evening options.
